On Illness

I just returned from the hospital. I will not be going back.

I had eaten something, or become exposed to something nasty and had a long, dark night on the Friday of Memorial day weekend. Saturday morning it was so bad I had my wife drive me to the E.R. By Saturday evening I had been diagnosed and was in a comfortable bed, in a tiny room of the oldest wing of the hospital. I had been poked with needles, had an I.V. put in (on the third try – ouch) and was in pain the entire time.

Something about being quarantined (they did not know how bad the bug was) for 4 days really took a toll on me. I lost about 10lbs from the 1000 trips to the toilet. I was chained to an IV and only had a 6 foot circle to live in (bed, toilet). I was going mad. It may have been the morphine. After a while I had them cut back on the morphine because it was making me crazy.

Anyway I am better and thinner now. I have discovered new notches on the belt. I have not ate anything rich or drank a beer in 10 days. I feel good. Call it a diarrhea-induced metamorphosis, but I feel better than I have in years.
